What is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that involves microinjections of various substances, such as vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts, directly into the middle layer of the skin (mesoderm). Developed in the 1950s by French doctor Michel Pistor, mesotherapy was initially used for pain relief. Over time, it gained popularity in the cosmetic world as an effective method for skin rejuvenation, fat reduction, and hair restoration. Mesotherapy has evolved to address a wide range of aesthetic concerns.

Types of Mesotherapy

Hair mesotherapy, often referred to as stem cell therapy, delivers essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly to hair follicles. Pain mesotherapy involves using fine needles to target the mesoderm, the skin's middle layer, for effective pain relief. Face mesotherapy, also known as mesolift, focuses on reducing visible signs of aging. Cellulite mesotherapy is designed to improve the skin's texture and address the "orange peel" effect caused by poor circulation. Regional adiposity treatments target localized fat deposits in areas such as the waist, abdomen, arms, and legs. Needle-free mesotherapy is a non-invasive option for wrinkle reduction, facial rejuvenation, hydration, body tightening, and hair care.

Mesotherapy can also be classified into two main types:

Lipolytic mesotherapy: Utilizes fat-reducing agents but requires regular sessions as fat cells may return over time.
Ablative mesotherapy: Employs detergents to destroy fat cells, offering longer-lasting results with fewer treatments.

Here are the primary types of mesotherapy:

Facial Mesotherapy (Mesolift)

Facial mesotherapy, also known as Mesolift, targets skin rejuvenation. It uses a combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid to nourish, hydrate, and revitalize the skin. Mesolift aims to improve skin elasticity, brightness, and texture, providing a radiant and youthful appearance.

Body Mesotherapy

Body mesotherapy focuses on fat reduction and cellulite treatment. The injections contain substances like phosphatidylcholine, deoxycholate, and plant extracts that break down fat cells in targeted areas. Common areas for body mesotherapy include the abdomen, thighs, arms, and buttocks. It's often chosen as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.

Hair Mesotherapy (Mesohair)

Hair mesotherapy, or Mesohair, is a treatment aimed at promoting hair growth and improving scalp health. It involves injecting a mixture of vitamins, amino acids, and minerals directly into the scalp. This boosts blood circulation, strengthens hair follicles, and encourages the growth of healthier, thicker hair. Mesohair is commonly used for individuals with hair thinning, hair loss, or alopecia.

Lipolysis Mesotherapy

Lipolysis mesotherapy is a technique that targets localized fat deposits, particularly in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise, like the double chin, love handles, and abdomen. Lipolysis mesotherapy involves using fat-dissolving agents to reduce fat in these stubborn areas, creating a more contoured appearance.

Pigmentation Mesotherapy

Pigmentation mesotherapy is used to reduce hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and melasma. Specialized formulations containing lightening agents like glutathione and vitamin C are injected into the skin to inhibit melanin production, helping even out skin tone and improve skin clarity.

Mesobotox

Mesobotox is a variation of mesotherapy that combines Botox with other ingredients to create a softer, more natural effect compared to traditional Botox. Mesobotox injections are administered across larger areas of the face or neck, targeting fine lines and improving skin texture without the "frozen" look often associated with Botox. It's especially popular for treating areas with thin skin.

Benefits of Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy offers several benefits that make it a popular choice in aesthetic and cosmetic treatments:

Improved Skin Hydration and Texture

Mesotherapy delivers essential nutrients directly to the skin, providing deep hydration and nourishment. This results in a smoother, softer, and more youthful skin texture.

Reduction in Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Facial mesotherapy stimulates collagen and elastin production, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leading to firmer and more youthful skin.

Enhanced Skin Radiance

The vitamins and antioxidants in mesotherapy solutions improve the skin's brightness and radiance, creating a healthy, natural glow.

Non-Surgical Fat Reduction

Body mesotherapy can help in contouring and shaping specific areas by reducing localized fat deposits. It offers a non-surgical alternative to liposuction, with minimal downtime and side effects.

Reduction of Cellulite

Mesotherapy can break down fat and improve blood circulation, which helps reduce cellulite. It's particularly effective for areas like thighs, buttocks, and hips.

Hair Regrowth and Strengthening

Hair mesotherapy promotes hair growth and strengthens existing hair by delivering essential nutrients to the scalp. It's suitable for people experiencing hair loss due to stress, hormonal changes, or nutritional deficiencies.

Treatment for Hyperpigmentation

Mesotherapy for pigmentation reduces dark spots and evens skin tone. It's effective for treating pigmentation issues such as melasma, age spots, and acne scars.

Procedure

A mesotherapy session typically lasts 20-45 minutes, depending on the treatment area and patient needs. The procedure includes the following steps:

Preparation: The area is cleaned and numbing cream may be applied for comfort.

Injection: Using a fine needle or mesotherapy gun, the aesthetician or dermatologist injects the solution into the targeted area. The depth and frequency of injections depend on the type of mesotherapy.

Aftercare: Post-treatment care involves avoiding sun exposure, makeup, and intense exercise for 24-48 hours.

How Long Do Results Last?

The duration of mesotherapy results varies depending on the type of treatment and the individual's lifestyle. Generally, a series of 3-6 sessions, spaced 1-4 weeks apart, is recommended for optimal results. Maintenance treatments every few months can help prolong the effects.

For facial rejuvenation, results can last 3-6 months, while body contouring may require maintenance sessions every 6-12 months. Hair mesotherapy may need ongoing maintenance for consistent improvement.

Side Effects and Risks

While mesotherapy is generally considered safe, there are some potential side effects, including:

- Redness and swelling at the injection site
- Mild bruising
- Sensitivity or soreness
- Itching or minor irritation

These side effects are usually mild and resolve within a few days. To minimize risks, it's essential to have mesotherapy performed by a qualified practitioner in a sterile environment.

Who is a Good Candidate for Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is suitable for individuals looking for a non-surgical option to improve skin quality, reduce localized fat, treat pigmentation, or stimulate hair growth. Ideal candidates include:

- Those with mild to moderate skin aging
- People with cellulite or stubborn fat areas
- Individuals experiencing hair thinning or loss
- People with uneven skin tone or pigmentation issues

However, mesotherapy is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with active skin infections, or those with certain medical conditions (e.g., autoimmune disorders).

Comparison with Other Treatments

While mesotherapy is effective, it's essential to understand how it compares to similar treatments:

Vs. Microneedling: While both treatments use needles to rejuvenate the skin, microneedling only stimulates collagen production, whereas mesotherapy also delivers active ingredients like vitamins and antioxidants.

Vs. Botox and Fillers: Botox and fillers provide more immediate and visible results in reducing wrinkles and adding volume, respectively. Mesotherapy offers a more gradual improvement in skin texture and tone.

Vs. Liposuction: Mesotherapy is non-surgical and less invasive than liposuction, but it's also less effective for larger areas of fat. It works best for small, localized fat deposits.
